Game Snapshot

QGD: 4.Nf3

Master Lens

Black (GM chesspanda123) turned a balanced Queen's Gambit Declined into a winning attack by marching the queen into White's camp and lining up the rooks on open files, eventually forcing White's king into a forced mate. The game demonstrates how active piece placement and exploiting weak squares around the opponent's king can convert a quiet position into a decisive win.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

Black followed the standard Queen's Gambit Declined plan: after 1...Nf6 and 2...e6, he castled early with **5...O-O**, securing the king and connecting the rooks. The move **6...c5** challenged White's center and after 7...Bxc5 the bishop was placed on an active diagonal, pressuring the d4 pawn. By playing **9...Re8** and later **16...Rac8**, Black put his rooks on the open e‑ and c‑files, ready to support any central break. This shows the principle of developing pieces to active squares and using open files for rooks.

Middlegame

Black created a powerful queen attack starting with **19...Qh4**, targeting the weak h2 pawn and forcing White's pieces onto defensive squares. After **24...Ne7** and **25...Nd5**, the knight jumped into the center, and the tactical shot **27...Nxe3** won a pawn and opened the e‑file. Black then seized the e‑file with **28...Rxe3**, placing a rook deep in White's position. The queen continued the infiltration with checks **31...Qg1+**, **32...Qg2**, **33...Qg3**, and **34...Qh3+**, driving the white king back and coordinating with the rook on g3. The final queen move **36...Qh1+** forced resignation. This sequence illustrates the importance of coordinating heavy pieces (queen and rooks) to exploit weak squares around the enemy king and to generate unstoppable threats.
