Game Snapshot

Petrov's Defense

Master Lens

The game was a tightly balanced Petrov Defense that stayed equal from the opening right through the endgame, ending in a three‑fold repetition draw. Both sides showed excellent accuracy, using precise piece placement and rook activity to neutralize any chances for a win.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

Black exchanged knights early with **3...d6** and **4...Nxe4**, simplifying the position and removing White's central knight. By developing the bishop to **7...Be7** and castling with **10...O-O**, Black secured king safety while keeping the pawn structure solid. This demonstrates the principle of early piece exchanges (simplification) and completing development before launching any attacks.

Middlegame

After the queens came off, Black placed the rooks on active files: **28...Rf6** followed by **29...Rf8** and later **30...Rd8**, keeping the e‑file closed to White’s rook and preventing infiltration. The knight hop **27...Nd5** and later **41...Nf6+** gave the king constant checks, forcing White to shuffle the king and eventually leading to the repetition. These moves show how coordinating rooks (control of open files) and using a knight as a checking piece can restrict the opponent’s king and force a draw when no breakthrough is possible.

Endgame

When the position settled into equal material, Black kept the king active with **37...Ke6** and used the knight to chase the white king around the board (**41...Nf6+**, **42...Nd5**, **43...Nf6+**, **44...Nd5**). By repeating the same checking pattern, Black secured a three‑fold repetition, illustrating the endgame principle of using perpetual check (repetition) to obtain a safe draw when no winning plan exists.
