Game Snapshot
Ruy Lopez
Master Lens
In this Ruy Lopez (C60) game both sides fought for the initiative, with Black (Firouzja2003) generating counter‑play on the queenside and later creating a dangerous passed pawn in the centre. The fight ended in a threefold repetition, illustrating how precise piece coordination and pawn pushes can balance a sharp attack and lead to a solid draw.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Black chose the off‑beat 3...**Nge7** and 4...**Ng6**, keeping the knight flexible while White committed to castling. After 6...**Bc5** the bishop was placed on an active diagonal, and the pawn moves **...b5**, **...b4**, **...a5**, and **...a6** seized space on the queenside. This shows the principle of gaining space and piece activity early, even with unconventional development.
Middlegame
When White launched a sacrifice with 21. **Rxh6+**, Black calmly recaptured 21...**gxh6** and later neutralised the attack with 27...**Kxg8** and 28...**Rxh6**. The decisive idea came with 31...**e3**, pushing a passed pawn that forced White’s pieces onto defensive squares. By 35...**Bf5** and 36...**Re6** Black coordinated the bishop, rook and queen to win material (37...**Qxf6**) and simplify to an equal queen‑less ending. The lesson is to create a passed pawn and use it to activate all pieces, turning a defensive situation into counter‑play.
Endgame
After the queens were exchanged, Black’s king stepped towards the centre (40...**Qe1+** 41. **Kh2** 41...**Qe4**) and the rook delivered perpetual checks from the fourth rank (44...**Qf4+**, 45...**Qc1+**, etc.). By keeping the rook active and the king safe, Black forced a threefold repetition, demonstrating the importance of king safety and using the rook to create perpetual check threats in a simplified ending.
