King's Indian Defense: Normal Variation, Rare Defenses
Master Lens
Firouzja2003 (Black) defeated XupermanX1 in a King’s Indian Defense by exchanging White’s key dark‑squared bishop, creating dangerous passed pawns on the kingside, and coordinating his rook and knight to deliver a crushing attack. The game shows how precise piece trades and pawn breaks can turn a solid opening into a winning assault.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Black followed the standard King’s Indian plan with ...Nf6, ...g6, ...Bg7 and castled early, keeping the king safe while preparing central breaks. The exchange on **10...Bh6** removed White’s dark‑squared bishop, weakening White’s control of the dark squares and making it easier for Black to launch a pawn storm later (the principle of eliminating an opponent’s key defender).
Middlegame
After winning the pawn on **18...Rxe5**, Black used the active rook to support a pawn advance on the kingside, starting with **20...h5** and the pawn captures **21...hxg4** and **22...gxh3**, which opened lines to White’s king. The coordinated push with ...f5, ...f4, ...e4 and ...f3 created connected passed pawns that forced White’s pieces onto defensive squares, while the rook on **31...f4** and knight on **35...Nf5** worked together to dominate the board (demonstrating the power of pawn storms and piece coordination).
Endgame
With the rook on **38...Rg3** and the knight on f5 controlling key escape squares, Black threatened both the white rook on f2 and the pawn on h2, leaving White no realistic defense. The final position shows how a well‑placed rook and knight can finish the attack once the opponent’s king is exposed (the principle of using heavy pieces to exploit a weakened king).
