Game Snapshot
Benoni Defense: Old Benoni
Master Lens
Black (GM) turned the Old Benoni into a winning endgame by first securing a solid fianchettoed bishop, then winning a piece with the tactical shot **18...Ne2+**, and finally exploiting the bishop pair and active rooks on the seventh rank to create unstoppable passed pawns. The game ends with Black’s king and pieces dominating, leading to a resignation (0‑1).
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Black developed the dark‑squared bishop to g7 with a fianchetto (**7...Bg7**) and placed the knight on d5 early, controlling the central squares and limiting White’s pawn breaks. This shows how a well‑placed bishop can restrict the opponent’s plans while keeping your own king safe.
Middlegame
The decisive tactical idea came with **18...Ne2+**, forcing White’s bishop to capture and then winning that bishop with **19...Rxe2**; Black emerged a piece up and kept the queen active. After that, Black’s rooks infiltrated the seventh rank (**45...Rc3+**, **46...Bxa5**, **48...Rc6**) and the bishop pair coordinated to target White’s king, illustrating the power of material advantage combined with piece activity.
Endgame
In the final phase Black’s king marched forward (**56...Ke4**, **57...Kf3**, **62...Kg3**) while the rook stayed on the seventh rank (**56...Re7**, **58...Rf7**) and the bishops chased the remaining white pieces, creating a connected passed pawn that White could not stop. This demonstrates the endgame principle that an active king and rook on the opponent’s seventh rank, supported by the bishop pair, can convert a modest material edge into a win.
