French Defense: Classical Variation, Normal Variation

Master Lens

Black (GHANDEEVAM2003) won a French Defense Classical Variation by turning a queenside pawn advance into a powerful attack on White's king. The game demonstrates how a well‑timed pawn break and coordinated piece activity can convert opening pressure into a decisive win.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

Black followed the standard French Classical plan: after 1...e6 and 2...d5, the knight moved to f6 and then to d7, keeping it flexible while supporting the central pawn chain. By playing ...c5, ...a6, and ...b5, Black expanded on the queenside, and the move ...b4 locked White's knight on c3, limiting White's piece play. This shows the principle of gaining space on the side opposite your opponent's king and restricting their pieces early.

Middlegame

Black created a passed pawn with ...a4 and ...a3, forcing White's king to step out after 26.Kxb2. The queen then entered the attack with ...Qa7, ...Qa1+, and ...Qc3+, while the knights jumped to c3 and a4, delivering checks and winning material. By using the pawn to open lines and coordinating the queen and knights, Black forced White's resignation. This illustrates how a passed pawn can open lines for an attack and how piece coordination (queen and knights) can overwhelm a exposed king.
