Game Snapshot
Semi-Slav Defense
Master Lens
In this Semi‑Slav Defense both players kept the tension and played very accurately, ending in a threefold repetition. White grabbed a piece with **24.Nxe6**, but Black’s pawn advance and a later queen promotion forced White into a series of rook checks that produced a perpetual (a drawn position). The game shows how tactical chances, active piece placement, and the power of checking with a rook can turn the tables.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
White developed quickly and kept the centre fluid by playing **5.Qc2** to connect the rooks and keep the queen flexible, then **6.b3** followed by **14.Bb2** to place the bishop on the long diagonal (a fianchetto) where it eyes Black’s king side. By exchanging on e5 with **9.dxe5** and opening the d‑file with **10.cxd5**, White maintained central tension (dynamic central play) while completing development.
Middlegame
White spotted the tactical shot **24.Nxe6**, capturing Black’s bishop on e6 and winning a piece. After Black recaptured with the pawn, White kept the initiative by sliding the rook to the open d‑file (**23.Rxd4**) and later invading the seventh rank with **29.Rxb7**, seizing a pawn and creating threats on Black’s back rank. This demonstrates the principle of exploiting overworked pieces and using open files to increase pressure (piece activity).
Endgame
When Black promoted a pawn on **35...d1=Q**, White immediately started a checking sequence with the rook (**36.Rh6+**, **37.Rg6+**, **38.Rf6+**, etc.). The continuous rook checks forced Black’s king to shuffle between g8 and h8, leading to a threefold repetition and a drawn result. This shows how an active rook can generate perpetual check (a drawing mechanism) even against a queen, and why keeping the king safe while delivering checks is crucial in the endgame.
