Benoni Defense: Old Benoni

Master Lens

Inthis Benoni Defense duel, both players kept a tight grip on the board, and Black turned a material edge into a drawn ending by activating the king and pawns. The game ended in a draw by insufficient material, showing how precise endgame technique can rescue a seemingly lost position.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

Black chose the Old Benoni setup with 1...e6 and 2...c5, then played 5...a6 and 6...g6 to prepare a fianchetto of the bishop on g7. By placing the bishop on the long diagonal (a fianchetto) Black put pressure on White's central d5 pawn and kept the queenside flexible. This demonstrates the principle of developing pieces to natural squares while creating counter‑play on the flank.

Middlegame

Black seized the initiative with the tactical shot 24...Rxb2, winning a pawn, and after 25.Rxb2 Bxb2 captured the rook, gaining a piece. The active rook on the b‑file and the bishop’s eye on b2 forced White to give up material. Later, Black’s 29...Bd4+ and the exchange on f5 (17...Rxf5) kept the pieces coordinated and limited White’s king safety. These moves show how an active piece can create concrete threats and how to exploit an opponent’s overloaded pieces.

Endgame

With a material advantage, Black pushed the kingside pawns (52...h5 and 53...h4) and used the king aggressively (e.g., 55...Kd5, 58...Kf6) to generate a passed pawn. Even though the pawn eventually disappeared, Black’s king activity forced White to trade down to a bishop versus king ending, which is a theoretical draw. The lesson is that in the endgame the king becomes a fighting piece, and recognizing when a draw is the best outcome is as important as trying to win.
