In this Semi‑Slav Defense, both sides played very accurately, and the game ended in a draw by threefold repetition. Black (the GM) showed how to keep the king safe, generate a dangerous passed pawn, and then use the queen to force a perpetual check. The game is a great illustration of solid opening play, pawn‑storm tactics in the middlegame, and precise queen maneuvering in the endgame.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

Black followed the main Semi‑Slav ideas: after **1...e6** and **2...c5**, the pawn on c5 challenged White’s center. By developing the knight to **3...Nf6**, then the bishop to **7...Be7**, and castling with **9...O‑O**, Black secured king safety early. The timely move **10...Nh5** forced White’s bishop to exchange, removing a potential attacker and keeping the position balanced (principle: develop pieces and safeguard the king before launching counter‑play).

Middlegame

When the position opened up, Black created a strong passed pawn with the pawn break **25...e5**, followed by **26...exf4** and the advance **29...f3**, then **30...f2**. This pawn storm forced White’s king into the open and gave Black a clear target. Black then coordinated the queen and rook, using moves like **31...Qd6**, **32...Qf4**, and the queen infiltration **37...Qxa2** to keep pressure (principle: a passed pawn can become a decisive engine of attack, especially when supported by active pieces).

Endgame

After the queens entered the battlefield, Black’s queen dominated the board, delivering a series of checks from **41...Qg5+** onward. By repeatedly checking the white king—**42...Qh5+**, **43...Qxh6**, **44...Qg7**, **45...Kg8**, **46...Kh7**, **47...Kg8**, **48...Qf8**, and later **54...Qg1+**—Black forced a perpetual check, leading to a threefold repetition. This shows the endgame lesson that a well‑placed queen can force a draw by perpetual check when the opponent’s king has limited escape squares.
