Nimzo-Indian Defense: St. Petersburg Variation, Fischer Variation
Master Lens
GMWSO won in just seven moves by delivering a powerful queen check that also attacked Black's bishop, forcing resignation. The game shows how a well‑timed check can create a double threat and win material right out of the opening.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
White developed the knights to natural squares with **3.Nc3** and **5.Ne2**, keeping the pawn centre solid with **1.d4**, **2.c4**, and **4.e3**. Then White played **7.Qa4+**, a queen move that gave check to the king and at the same time attacked the bishop on a6. This double threat (a check and a piece attack) left Black with no good defense—blocking the check with ...Nc6 would still lose the bishop, so Black resigned. The lesson is to look for checks that create multiple threats and to avoid placing pieces where they can be hit by a single queen move.
