Game Snapshot
English Opening: Anglo-Indian Defense
Master Lens
GMWSO (White) used the English Opening to build a solid but flexible position, then seized the initiative with precise tactics that won material and created a passed pawn. By coordinating his rooks, queen and bishop, he forced Black's king into a vulnerable spot and secured a winning queen exchange, leading to a clean victory.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
White began with Nf3, g3 and Bg2, fianchettoing the bishop to control the long diagonal (a classic English Opening idea). After castling with O-O, he played c4 and later b3, establishing a strong grip on the centre from the flank while keeping the king safe. This shows how a player can develop pieces harmoniously and keep options open before committing the central pawns.
Middlegame
White launched a decisive attack with 20.Bxb7, winning a pawn and opening lines toward Black's queenside. He followed up with 21.c6, creating a passed pawn that forced Black to divert pieces to stop it. After Black's 22...Nxe3+ forced the king to move, White kept the pressure with 24.Bc5 and 25.Rcd1, then 26.Qxc4 captured a key pawn and 27.Rxd3 seized a piece on d3. These moves illustrate the principle of converting a material edge by coordinating pieces and exploiting over‑extended enemy pieces.
Endgame
With the material advantage secured, White used the active rook on d8 and queen on c3 to give a check on 30.Rd8+, driving the Black king to g7. After 31...f6, White played 32.a5 and forced the queen exchange with 33.Qxa5, leaving Black with a losing rook‑and‑pawn ending. This demonstrates how simplifying the position when ahead (exchanging queens) can turn a winning material advantage into a straightforward win.
