Queen's Gambit Declined: Normal Defense

Master Lens

GMWSO (Black) turned an equal Queen's Gambit Declined exchange opening into a win by securing the bishop pair early, then generating active rook play and an outside passed pawn that forced White's king into the open. The game demonstrates how precise piece activity and timely pawn breaks can convert a balanced position into a decisive endgame advantage.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

After the early exchange on d5, Black played **6...Nh5**, attacking White's bishop on f4, and followed with **7...Nxf4** to capture that bishop, thereby gaining the bishop pair (a long‑term advantage in piece activity). By removing White's active bishop and keeping a solid pawn structure, Black showed the principle that winning a better‑valued piece early can give lasting strategic benefits.

Middlegame

Black placed the rooks on the central e‑file with **17...Rhe8** and later **37...Re8**, then opened lines with pawn pushes **20...g6**, **31...f5+**, and **36...c5**, creating dynamic chances for the rooks and knights. The knight jump **46...Nb3+** and the bishop capture **47...Bxc3** won material, while the pawn advance **43...d3** produced an outside passed pawn that forced White's pieces onto defensive squares. This illustrates the principle of using pawn breaks to activate heavy pieces and generate a passed pawn that restricts the opponent.

Endgame

In the final phase Black's king marched to **49...Kxh6**, the bishop settled on **41...Bh8** controlling key dark squares, and the rook moved to **51...Rc5**, cutting off White's king and supporting the advance of the a‑pawn. The coordinated use of the active king, bishop, and rook, together with the advancing passed pawn, demonstrates how to dominate the board in an endgame by restricting the opponent's king and creating unstoppable threats.
