Game Snapshot
English Opening: King's English Variation, Two Knights Variation
Master Lens
HansOnTwitch (Black) won a sharp English Opening by building a kingside pawn storm, simplifying the position with accurate piece exchanges, and then advancing a passed a‑pawn to promotion. The game shows how a well‑timed pawn break and careful coordination of pieces can turn a seemingly balanced opening into a decisive win.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Black developed the dark‑squared bishop to g7 and the queen’s bishop to b7, creating a solid fianchetto (a bishop placed on a long diagonal) that controls the centre from a distance. By playing ...f5 and later ...g5, Black generated a pawn storm on the kingside, forcing White to weaken his own king side and giving Black active piece play.
Middlegame
After the exchange sequence 19...gxf4 20.exf4 exf4 21.Bxf4 Nxf4 22.gxf4, Black traded off White's active bishop and opened the g‑file, then placed the rook on e8 to pressure the e‑file (a central file). The subsequent moves ...Bb5, ...a4, and ...Bf6 coordinated the bishop and queen, while the rook on e8 defended key squares, allowing the a‑pawn to march forward safely.
Endgame
Black pushed the passed a‑pawn with ...a3, ...a2 and finally ...a1=Q, creating a new queen that could not be stopped. The promotion forced White to resign, illustrating the power of a distant passed pawn supported by pieces (the bishop and queen) in the endgame.
