Bird Opening: Dutch Variation
Master Lens
Hikaru (Black) won a sharp Bird Opening by quickly seizing space with ...d4, fianchettoing his bishop to g7, and then coordinating his queen and knightsto win White's queen on move 13. The game shows how a well‑timed pawn advance and piece activity can turn a normal opening into a winning attack.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Black developed his bishop to the long diagonal with **3...Bg7**, then pushed the d‑pawn to **7...d4**, grabbing space in the center and forcing White's knight to retreat to a4. This early pawn thrust (gaining central space) and the fianchetto (controlling the long diagonal) limited White's piece placement and set the stage for a later attack.
Middlegame
After White's 9.Nxc5, Black opened the position with **9...dxe3**, then centralized his knight with **10...Nd5** and later jumped it to **12...Nc3**, attacking White's queen and creating threats on the king. The decisive move **13...Qxd4+** captured a pawn with check, winning White's queen and forcing resignation. This demonstrates the principle of coordinating pieces (queen and knight) to create a tactical strike that wins material.
