Game Snapshot
Modern Defense
Master Lens
Hikaru (Black) defeated kushbhagat2009 by skillfully exploiting the Modern Defense, turning early piece activity into a decisive material gain. The game shows how precise piece coordination and timely pawn breaks can convert a solid opening into a winning midgame.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Hikaru chose the Modern Defense with 1...g6 and quickly fianchetched his bishop to g7, controlling the long diagonal and preparing a flexible pawn structure. By playing 5...Bg4 he pinned White's knight on f3, and after 6...Bxf3 he exchanged the bishop for the knight, eliminating a defender of the e5‑square. Castling long with **16...O-O-O** placed his king safely while keeping the rook on the d‑file ready to pressure White's center.
Middlegame
After White's 17.Ne4, Hikaru seized the initiative with **17...Nxe5**, winning a pawn and opening lines toward White's king. He then used the open d‑file with **19...Rxd4**, forcing White's rooks to trade and leaving Black with an active rook on d8. The knight jump **22...Nf5** threatened the g3‑pawn and prepared a knight invasion; later **30...h4** created a passed pawn and forced White's king into the open. The decisive combination began with **31...Nxh4**, followed by **33...Rd3** bringing the rook behind the passed pawn, and finished with **35...Nxf3**, winning the queen and forcing resignation.
