Game Snapshot
Queen's Pawn Game
Master Lens
Hikaru (Black) used a Modern Defense setup to neutralize White's early queen side activity, then patiently improved his pieces and created threats on the queenside. By exploiting open files and weak pawns, he forced a winning material gain and White resigned. The game showcases how a solid opening plan combined with precise piece placement can turn into a decisive mid‑game attack.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Hikaru fianchetched his bishop with **...g6** and **...Bg7**, then challenged White's center immediately with **...c5** and the queen move **...Qb6**. Exchanging queens on move **7...axb6** simplified the position, and after developing the knight to **...Nc6** and the bishop to **...Be6**, he placed the king safely with **...O-O**. This shows the principle of developing pieces to active squares while keeping the king safe and reducing the opponent's attacking chances.
Middlegame
After White castled, Hikaru seized the open b‑file with **...b5** and later doubled rooks on the a‑file by playing **...Ra6** and **...Rfd8**, putting pressure on White's queenside pawns. The pawn break **...bxc4** opened the b‑file further, and the knight jump **...Nxb4** on move 24 captured a pawn and forced White's rook off the seventh rank. He then activated his bishop with **...Bh6**, targeting the g4 pawn, and used the rook infiltration **...Ra4** followed by the checking knight move **...Nb4+** to force a forced exchange on b4, winning material. These moves illustrate the importance of creating open lines for heavy pieces, targeting weak pawns, and using tactical motifs (checks and captures) to convert a positional advantage into a winning material gain.
