Game Snapshot
Scandinavian Defense
Master Lens
Hikaru, playing White, turned a standard Scandinavian Defense into a winning attack by developing his pieces rapidly, keeping the bishop pair, and coordinating his queen, bishop and rook to win Black’s queen. The game ends with Black resigning after White’s rook move **27.Rf4**, a clear demonstration of how active piece play can convert a small edge into a full win.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Hikaru claimed the center early with **1.e4** and after the queen trade on **2...Qxd5** he placed his knight on **3.Nc3**, attacking the queen and forcing it to retreat to **3...Qd6**. He then developed his bishop to **5.Bc4**, eyeing the vulnerable f7‑pawn, and completed quick castling with **7.h3** and **8.O-O**, securing king safety while keeping the rook ready on the e‑file. This rapid, purposeful development (a classic opening principle) gave White a lead in piece activity and control of the center.
Middlegame
White centralized his knight with **11.Ne5**, then exchanged it on **12.Nxc6** to give up a knight for a bishop, ending up with the bishop pair and open lines for his rooks. He used the bishop on **13.Bg5** to pin Black’s queen on d6, limiting Black’s options, and later placed a rook on the d‑file with **15.Rad1**, preparing to seize the open file. After Black’s pawn push **15...b4**, White’s knight hopped to **16.Na4**, keeping the pawn from advancing further, and the pawn break **18.c4** opened the center; when Black captured on **18...bxc3**, White recaptured with **19.Nxc3**, maintaining material balance. The decisive sequence began with **24.Qg3**, after Black’s **24...Bxd4** White answered **25.Rxd4**, forcing the queen to **25...Qc5**; then **26.Bf6** attacked the queen and forced it to **26...Qf5**, and finally **27.Rf4** attacked the queen again, leaving Black with no defense and leading to resignation.
