Sicilian Defense: Moscow Variation
Master Lens
Hikaru (Black) steered the Moscow Variation of the Sicilian into a sharp pawn‑storm, gaining space on the queenside and forcing White's pieces onto awkward squares. By keeping his pieces active and exchanging into a winning endgame, he secured a clean victory (0‑1).
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
After White's check on **3.Bb5+**, Black answered with **3...Nd7**, blocking the check and immediately challenging the bishop. He then pushed **5...a6**, **6...b5**, and **7...c4**, creating a pawn chain that drove the white bishop back and seized space on the queenside. This shows how a timely pawn advance can restrict the opponent's pieces and claim the initiative.
Middlegame
Black patiently built pressure on the central and kingside files, first winning a pawn with **23...Nxf4** and then centralising his knight on **24...Ne6** and **25...Nc5** to eye key squares like e4 and d3. After White's queen left the defense, Black exchanged rooks with **34...Rxe4** and followed up with **35...Nd6**, a fork that won material and left White with no compensation. The lesson is that active piece placement and timely exchanges can turn a small advantage into a decisive one.
