Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation

Master Lens

Hikaru (White) defeated Ykow2 in a sharp Alapin Sicilian by quickly developing his pieces, creating a strong pawn centre and then exploiting Black’s misplaced pieces to win material. The game shows how active piece placement and timely pawn breaks can turn a seemingly equal opening into a winning middlegame.

What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

White used the Alapin move **2.c3** to keep the centre closed and then pushed **3.e5**, forcing Black’s knight to retreat to d5 where it became a target. By playing **5.Qxd4** and later **7.Qg4**, White kept the queen active while developing the knights and bishops, and castled with **11.O-O** to bring the king to safety and connect the rooks. This demonstrates the principle of gaining space with pawn pushes and using the queen to coordinate early attacks before the opponent finishes development.

Middlegame

After securing the king, White launched a pawn storm with **20.g4**, opening lines for the rook on e1 and the bishop on f3. The exchange **22.Bxg5 hxg5** removed Black’s key defender on g5, weakening Black’s king side pawn structure. White then centralized his knights with **28.Nfd4** and created a powerful outpost on e6 with **29.Ne6**, threatening both the queen and the rook. The decisive combination came when White’s knight jumped to **31.Nec5**, then captured the b7 pawn with **32.Nxb7**, winning a pawn and forcing Black’s rooks onto defensive squares. Finally, **33.Rxd5** seized the open d‑file, winning a piece after Black’s forced **33...Nxd5**. These moves illustrate the importance of creating threats that force the opponent’s pieces onto passive squares, and then converting those threats into material gain.
