Game Snapshot
Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation
Master Lens
Hikaru (White) won by launching an aggressive queen and pawn attack early, then sacrificing a bishop to open the black king’s position and finish with a decisive queen capture. The game shows how active piece play, opposite‑side castling, and a well‑timed tactical strike can turn a dynamic opening into a quick win.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Hikaru moved his queen out early with **Qxd4**, **Qg4**, and **Qg3**, using it to pressure Black’s center and force the pawn move ...f5. At the same time he advanced the h‑pawn to **h4** and **h5**, creating a pawn storm against Black’s king side. Both sides then castled long (**O‑O‑O**), which meant the rooks faced opposite wings, a situation that encourages attacking on the side where the opponent’s king is less protected (opposite‑side castling). This demonstrates the principle of generating early threats while keeping your own king safe on the opposite flank.
Middlegame
After Black’s pieces crowded on the queenside, Hikaru sacrificed his bishop with **Bxa6+** to pull the black king into the corner and open the a‑file. He then lifted his rook to **Rd6**, placing it on the same file as the black king and ready to deliver a decisive blow. Finally, the queen entered the enemy camp with **Qxd8+**, winning material and forcing Black’s resignation. This sequence shows how a tactical sacrifice can open lines (a discovered attack) and how coordinating a rook and queen on the same file can create unstoppable threats (the principle of piece coordination and exploiting a weakened king position).
