Game Snapshot
Modern Defense
Master Lens
Hikaru (Black) used the Modern Defense to build a solid but flexible setup, then turned the position sharp with pawn breaks and active piece play, forcing White's king into the open and delivering a decisive queen attack. The game ended with Black’s queen capturing the last white piece on **41...Qxf5**, securing a win.
What The GM Did Well By Phase
Opening
Hikaru fianchetched his bishop with **1...g6** and **2...Bg7**, giving the king a safe haven and controlling the long diagonal (a fianchetto). He then played ...a6 and ...b6 followed by **11...Bb7**, preparing the bishop on the long diagonal and keeping the queenside flexible. By developing the knights to c6 and f6, castling on move **8...O-O**, and centralizing the rooks with **9...Re8** and **20...Rae8**, he achieved a harmonious piece placement that limited White’s central ambitions.
Middlegame
After White captured on g7, Hikaru recaptured with **18...Kxg7**, keeping his king safe while maintaining the bishop pair. He then opened the position with **28...f5**, followed by the pawn capture **29...fxe4**, which cleared the f‑file for his rook. The bishop moved to an active square on **30...Bf5**, targeting White’s queen and central squares. By exchanging rooks on **32...Rxe3** and **34...Rxe3**, he simplified into a favorable endgame. The decisive infiltration began with **36...Re1+**, forcing the white king forward, and the knight jump **37...Nbd3+** drove the king further into the open. The queen entered the attack with **39...Qxc6+**, checking the king and winning a pawn, then continued with **40...Qg6+** and the final capture **41...Qxf5**, which eliminated White’s last defender and clinched the win.
