What The GM Did Well By Phase

Opening

Carlsen answered White’s aggressive 8.g4 with solid development: **8...Bb7** placed the bishop on the long diagonal, eyeing the e4‑square, while **12...Rc8** brought the a‑rook to the open c‑file. He also prepared the queenside pawn thrust with **7...b5** and kept the king safe by delaying castling. This shows how counter‑play on the opposite wing (queenside) can neutralize a pawn storm on the kingside.

Middlegame

After White’s sacrifice on **18.gxf7+**, Carlsen calmly returned the king to the centre (**18...Kxf7**) and then forced a queen exchange with **20...Qxf2+**. With queens off the board, he used his bishops to win material: **23...Bxb2** captured a pawn, **24...Bxa3** took another, and **25...Bc5+** forced the white king to move. These precise piece grabs demonstrate the power of simplifying when ahead (exchanging queens and winning pawns).

Endgame

In the final phase Carlsen coordinated his rook, bishop, and knight to dominate the board. The rook infiltrated the seventh rank with **38...Rc8**, the bishop on g7 (after **36...Bxg7**) controlled key dark squares around the white king, and the knight on e4 (from **29...Nxe4**) restricted White’s bishop and pawn moves. By keeping his pieces active and the white king exposed, he turned a material edge into a forced win.
